Water Temperatures and Trout

Water temperatures can play a huge part in a trout’s eating pattern and overall health. Trout are typically a cold freshwater fish and when water temps rise can become stressed and die. It is paramount that anglers be aware of this when out fishing in unfamiliar waters and their own waters to help protect the fish and where they live.

Due to Power plant Maintenance, there is currently water flowing over the Alcova Dam spillway. This causes higher-than-normal water temperatures and can be dangerous for fish in the Grey Reef section of the Platte. Spillways pull the top level of water off of the reservoir which is approaching 70 degrees and can warm up as it flows down river. It is recommended that fishing be set to early in the morning and visit some of our other great tail waters. If fishing, check water temperatures throughout the day and try to do quick catch and releases. If temperatures hit 68 degrees or above it’s recommended that you hold off fishing until the water cools down.

Here are a few tips for checking temps and what to look for when out on the water!

-Water temps 67 degrees or above fish can become very stressed (eating typically halts).

-60-65 degrees, fish trout with heavier lines and focus on quick releases.

-45-58 degrees is the ideal fishing temperature range, normal trout behavior (trout are actively eating and seeking food).

It’s a great idea to keep a water thermometer in your pack when you want to go out. Especially if fishing waters that you might be unfamiliar with or are known for rapidly increasing and decreasing temperatures.
